Key points from today’s guests:

Izzie Duvall, mother of Dallas

  • Izzie’s daughter, Dallas was only four pounds when she was born and had a rare genetic condition.
  • The condition is called AHC (alternating hemiplegia of childcare) and there are less than 1,000 cases worldwide.
  • After spending time in the NICU, Izzie found the Neonatal Medical Home, which was the first in the nation started by a nurse from The University of Kansas Health System 11 years ago.
  • The Neonatal Medical Home provided comprehensive care for Dallas. After years of treatment and therapy, Dallas is now accomplishing things that her parents weren't sure that they would ever see.
  • It was most helpful to know that she was part of the medical team with communication and decisions.
  • The Neonatal Medical Home has been an unbelievable asset and the nurses have gone above and beyond to help and support us.

Rachel Brown, R.N., clinical nurse coordinator, Neonatal Medical Home, The University of Kansas Health System

  • Since its start in 2013, the Neonatal Medical Home has helped thousands of kids and their parents.
  • Occupational, speech, and physical therapy can all be provided in the same place – it’s a one-stop shop for medical needs.
  • Instead of going to different locations to meet with different specialists, families can get that in one location with the Neonatal Medical Home.
  • We now see children until age 10, which we're excited about.
  • We're willing to go the extra mile because we do a lot of things that I think other nurses don't. We help families get things coordinated with their medical care. So we’re always there for everything.

Emily Fritch, R.N., clinical nurse, Neonatal Medical Home, The University of Kansas Health System

  • We end up developing such a close relationship with these patients because we see them so often and for so many different things.
  • It's been really rewarding watching Dallas get older and excel in things that we didn't know she'd be able to excel at.
  • We are also impressed with Izzie and how strong she is and what an advocate she is.
  • We are here for our families and want them to feel like they are family.

Wednesday, May 8 at 8 a.m. is the next Open Mics with Dr. Stites. Extraordinary nurses and nurse practitioners share their expert advice that we can all learn from as we celebrate Nurses Week.
